The role of a CGI backplate, or scene plate is often understated and indeed taken a lot for granted, so we thought we’d take a deeper dive into the importance behind why this 2D medium is so important in the 3D world. The backplate is often perceived as the poor cousin of the 3D stills process, but actually it not only is the foundation of your image but also the one element of your composition that will dictate the angle, lensing, and positioning of where and how you place your 3D data sets.
The Art of Seeing Differently
We like to think here at Domeble we know a thing or two about capturing backplates (and also our 360° HDRI maps), and how to get the most out of any location. We always capture a location that allows for the integration of a 3D data set within the scene that is sympathetic to how the data will best be showcased within each particular image. As important as this, is understanding the shape and form of how the scene lighting will affect the captured backplate scene and the illumination of the HDRI maps.
The Science of High-Resolution Precision
I founded Domeble with the objective of bringing, both my own and other experienced automotive photographers’ work to the visualization and advertising sectors by providing a viable alternative to the industry and providing a licensed service that was as good as any professional commissioned automotive shoot. My objective was not only to provide a bunch of images, but to offer a complete scene choice with angles that would afford the CG artist the greatest freedom to create an image from a front 3/4 to a rear 7/8, or a dead-on profile, and to offer the choice of low to high camera heights and lensing options from wide to long. In addition to offering selection, I wanted the quality of our backplates to be the best they possibly could be, shot on the latest and best hi-resolution cameras with precision optics, and this approach to capturing a location scene is a core value that we continue to execute every time we point the lens towards the scene.
